Tolentino discharged from Schneider Hospital after COVID-19 treatment
Rolly Tolentino, 47, was discharged from Schneider Regional Medical Center on July 31, 2020, after treatment for COVID-19, according to Government House.
Tolentino had been admitted to the hospital in critical condition on May 7, 2020, after being rescued from a freighter passing by the U.S. Virgin Islands. Government House said the vessel had been denied entry into Puerto Rico before Tolentino was admitted in the territory.
Government House said Tolentino, who had been identified publicly as "Sam the Sailor" to protect his privacy during government COVID-19 briefings, was COVID-free and was being transported to his home in the Philippines.
At a send-off at the hospital on July 31, 2020, Schneider interim Chief Executive Officer Dr. Luis Amaro and St. Thomas-St. John-Water Island Administrator Avery Lewis escorted Tolentino while hospital staff lined the hallways and applauded, according to the statement.
