U.S. Virgin Islands received $3.4 million in federal insular affairs grants

The U.S. Virgin Islands received $3.4 million in funding from the U.S. Department of the Interior's Office of Insular Affairs during a June 5, 2019, meeting at Government House, according to Government House.

The funding included $1,472,580 through the Office of Insular Affairs' Technical Assistance Program and Maintenance Assistance Program, and $1,864,000 in Capital Improvement Project funding.

According to the award letter presented by Assistant Secretary of Insular Affairs Douglas Domenech, the Technical Assistance Program grants included $270,000 for the Department of Planning and Natural Resources' e-permitting system project, $500,000 for the Office of Management and Budget's reconciliation of the Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards project, $100,000 for DPNR's Division of Libraries, Archives and Museums for an ADA awareness campaign and mentorship program campaign, and $100,000 for the Virgin Islands Economic Development Authority for a heritage properties arts project.

Maintenance Assistance Program grants included $300,000 for DPNR's Division of Libraries, Archives and Museums for maintenance of air-conditioning units and generators and staff training, and $202,580 for Ivanna Eudora Kean High School's JROTC Department for a drill pad covering project.

The Capital Improvement Project funding included $996,265 for the Frederiksted road rehabilitation project, $323,250 for the Charlotte Amalie road rehabilitation project, and $544,485 for the Cruz Bay and Coral Bay road rehabilitation project.

Government House said the Technical Assistance Program and Maintenance Assistance Program awards were part of the Office of Insular Affairs' first round of fiscal year 2019 determinations, with additional grant reviews planned for the summer.
