WAPA announced St. Croix water voucher distribution for affected neighborhoods

The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said on November 16, 2023, that it would distribute $100 drinking-water vouchers on St. Croix to water customers living in areas affected by lead and copper in the water supply.

WAPA said distribution was scheduled for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Saturday, November 18, through Monday, November 20.

Drive-thru distribution on November 18 and November 19 was set for the parking lot adjacent to Midre Cummings Park in Frederiksted for customers in La Grange, Smithfield, Wheel of Fortune, Two Brothers, White Lady, Hannah’s Rest, Campo Rico, Whim and Stoney Ground. A second drive-thru site at John H. Woodson Junior High School was designated for customers in Colquohoun, Mon Bijou, Barren Spot, Diamond West, Strawberry Hill, Sion Farm, St. John and Montpellier East.

A walk-up distribution site at the Agricultural Fairgrounds in Estate Lower Love, using the eastern entrance, was scheduled for November 18 through November 20 for customers in Grove Place, St. Georges, Adventure Hill, Paradise, Mount Pleasant South, Williams Delight, Profit and Castle Burke. WAPA said customers from other affected neighborhoods could also use the Agricultural Fairgrounds site on November 20, when the other locations would be closed.

The authority said pre-registration was to open on the afternoon of November 17, 2023, to help determine eligibility. Residents who did not pre-register were told to present identification and a WAPA water account number. Renters without a water account in their name were told to provide identification, the account number and proof of physical address, or complete an eligibility verification form on site.

WAPA said residents of Aureo Diaz Heights, Candido Guadalupe and Williams Delight communities managed by the Virgin Islands Housing Authority would be notified by their housing manager and would not need to visit the distribution centers. The authority also said Department of Human Services Meals on Wheels participants and people on the program's waiting list would receive vouchers with their meals.
