Bryan signed medical cannabis bill and acted on other measures on Jan. 19, 2019

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. signed several bills into law on Jan. 19, 2019, including the Virgin Islands Medicinal Cannabis Patient Care Act, according to Government House.

The law authorized the medicinal use and regulation of cannabis and the regulation of Medicinal Cannabis Provisioning Centers in the territory. The measure did not authorize recreational marijuana use.

Bryan also vetoed Bill No. 32-0236, which would have established a new category of dental professionals called dental therapists to be licensed by the Board of Dental Examiners. Government House said the veto was based on public health and safety concerns. Bryan also asked the Legislature to repeal Act No. 8150, enacted on Jan. 6, 2019, which added dental therapists to the board's jurisdiction.

Bryan approved Bill No. 32-0256, which amended Title 9 of the Virgin Islands Code to enact the Finance Lenders Law.

He also approved Bill No. 32-0327, which enacted several uniform laws, including measures on non-probate transfer on death, real property transfer on death, disclaimer of property interests, custodial trusts and partition of heirs property.

Bryan vetoed Bill No. 32-0351, the Virgin Islands Timeshare Resale Act, and asked the Legislature to pursue a broader overhaul of timeshare sales laws.
