The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said on November 20, 2023, that 1,288 water vouchers had been distributed over the previous weekend to St. Croix residents affected by elevated lead and copper levels in potable water.

According to the release, vouchers were distributed on November 18 and 19 at the Agricultural Fairgrounds in Estate Lower Love, John H. Woodson Elementary School and Midre Cummings Playground. The authority said distribution was scheduled to continue on November 20 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Agricultural Fairgrounds only.

WAPA said the free vouchers could be redeemed for water at five locations on St. Croix and were provided to eligible WAPA water customers. As of November 19, the authority said 57 account holders had registered but had not yet picked up their vouchers.

The release said members of the V.I. National Guard assisted WAPA, other government agencies and the Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency with the distribution effort. It also said the Department of Planning and Natural Resources operated a hotline at 340-514-3666 on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for water-sampling concerns.
