WAPA said construction would begin Sept. 21 on underground electrical project at St. Croix container port
The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said on September 17, 2021, that construction would begin on September 21 on an underground electrical project serving the Wilfred "Bomba" Allick Port and Transshipment Center at Krause Lagoon on St. Croix.
WAPA said the $2.5 million project was funded through the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. J. Benton Construction Inc. was identified as the contractor. The work was to include trenching and conduit installation to replace overhead electrical lines and equipment with underground infrastructure.
According to WAPA, the project was intended to serve facilities including the Gordon A. Finch Molasses Pier, Virgin Islands Port Authority docks and warehouses, and nearby buildings.
WAPA said traffic along Container Port Road would be affected once work began. The impacted area was described as starting at the intersection with the Melvin H. Evans Highway, turning onto Container Port Road and continuing south on Route 75. The authority said flaggers and posted directional signs would be used for traffic control.
The authority also said similar underground electrical projects were planned for St. Thomas and St. John.
