U.S. Virgin Islands completes final round of American Rescue Plan stimulus checks

The Virgin Islands government said on June 21, 2021, that it had completed distribution of American Rescue Plan stimulus payments after mailing 4,985 checks totaling $6,993,910, most of them to Social Security beneficiaries.

Government House said the Bureau of Internal Revenue and the Department of Finance had paid out more than $226 million in COVID-19 relief through three federal programs in less than a year.

The administration also announced the start of the Labor Department's "Skills-for-Today" workforce development program, a $9 million initiative intended to train more than 600 people. According to Government House, the program included training for 400 people in construction trades, 75 in administrative services and 165 in on-the-job training in industries including hospitality, health care, marine, information technology and cybersecurity.

Government House said the program was being managed by the Virgin Islands Department of Labor and ICF Incorporated LLC.

The administration also reported that 4,364 first vaccine doses had been administered, representing 54.4% of the eligible population, and that 35,151 people were fully vaccinated, or 44.3% of the eligible population.

As of June 5, 2021, Government House said the territory had a 1.87% positivity rate and 87 active COVID-19 cases: 22 on St. Croix, 62 on St. Thomas and three on St. John. It reported 30 fatalities, one hospitalized COVID-19 patient at Juan F. Luis Medical Center on St. Croix and one COVID-19 patient in intensive care at Schneider Regional Medical Center on St. Thomas.
