Mapp urged UVI graduates to seek jobs in Virgin Islands at 54th commencement

Gov. Kenneth E. Mapp addressed graduates at the University of the Virgin Islands' 54th commencement ceremony on St. Thomas on Thursday, May 17, 2018, and urged them to consider government and private-sector jobs in the territory as recovery work continued after the 2017 hurricanes.

At the ceremony at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center, Mr. Mapp said recovery funding would support hiring and recruitment across the government.

UVI President David Hall said the Class of 2018 had persevered through academic and personal obstacles, including Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

Class speaker Che-Raina Warner told graduates to be fearless and take chances, drawing on her experience traveling to China in 2017.

Actor Danny Glover delivered the keynote address and told graduates to remember the resilience they showed after the storms. UVI also awarded honorary degrees to Glover, radio personality Athniel "Addie" Ottley of WSTA, and former Sen. Holland Redfield.

The university scheduled its Albert A. Sheen Campus commencement ceremony on St. Croix for 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 18, 2018. The university said more than 300 degrees were to be conferred across both campuses.
