FAA awarded U.S. Virgin Islands airports $41.1 million under CARES Act
The Federal Aviation Administration awarded the U.S. Virgin Islands $41,145,247 under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act to support airport operations, according to a Government House statement published April 14, 2020.
Of that amount, $21,527,641 was allocated to Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas and $19,617,606 was allocated to Henry E. Rohlsen Airport on St. Croix.
The statement said the funds could be used to keep airports operating safely, retain airport and aviation workers, and support airport finances. It said the money could be used for any lawful airport revenue purpose under FAA policy, including requirements tied to new airport development contracts.
Government House said the CARES Act, signed into law on March 27, 2020, included $10 billion for eligible U.S. airports affected by the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The statement said the FAA planned to make the funds available in April 2020.
