Power restored to St. Thomas and St. John customers after overnight outage
A major power outage affected most customers in the St. Thomas-St. John district on the night of June 13, 2021, after an electrical fault on a distribution feeder and operational problems with two generating units, the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said.
WAPA said a high-magnitude fault on Feeder 6A inside the Randolph Harley Power Plant shortly before 7:30 p.m. caused four of the five dispatched generating units to trip offline, leaving only two distribution feeders in service. Most customers on St. Thomas, St. John, Hassel Island and Water Island were affected.
WAPA said plant personnel worked for several hours to address problems with Units 15 and 23 while line crews repaired damaged equipment on Feeder 6A.
With two generators online, service was restored to all customers at 12:25 a.m. on June 14, 2021, according to the authority.
