Health Department said second COVID-19 boosters were available to eligible Virgin Islands residents
The Virgin Islands Health Department said on April 4, 2022, that second COVID-19 booster shots were available to residents age 50 and older and to people with underlying medical conditions, if at least four months had passed since their first booster dose.
Health Commissioner Justa Encarnacion also said the department was monitoring a COVID-19 outbreak at Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School on St. Thomas. The school had closed during the previous week after the outbreak was identified.
Faculty and staff were tested on April 1, and about 500 students were being tested on April 4, according to the department. People who tested positive were instructed to isolate, while close contacts were asked to quarantine as contact tracing continued.
The department said the outbreak was still active and did not provide case numbers.
In territorywide COVID-19 data reported as of March 28, the department said it was tracking 51 active cases, including 25 on St. Croix, 18 on St. Thomas and eight on St. John. It reported a seven-day positivity rate of 2.41% and said no COVID-19 patients were hospitalized at Juan F. Luis Hospital or Schneider Regional Medical Center.
The Department of Human Services also said senior centers on St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix had reopened after pandemic-related closures. The St. Thomas STRIVE Center reopened on March 22, the Adrian Center on St. John reopened on March 29, and the St. Croix Richmond Center, operating temporarily at the Christiansted Lagoon Pavilion, reopened on April 1.
