FEMA approval allowed Paul E. Joseph Stadium project to resume

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. announced on Oct. 14, 2021, that construction on the Paul E. Joseph Stadium in Frederiksted would resume the following week after the Federal Emergency Management Agency approved a Conditional Letter of Map Revision.

According to Government House, construction had been halted in August 2020 while FEMA reviewed concerns about portions of the project being located in a floodplain.

Government House said Bryan had submitted legislation to the 33rd Legislature in January 2020 to allocate $8.2 million from the Internal Revenue Matching Fund for completion of the stadium project.

A Conditional Letter of Map Revision is a FEMA determination on whether a proposed project, if built as proposed, would meet minimum National Flood Insurance Program standards.
