WAPA said composite pole project was 52% complete across the territory

The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said on October 13, 2021, that its territory-wide composite pole installation project was about 52% complete.

WAPA said contractors Haugland Virgin Islands and BBC Electric Services were carrying out the work, with Haugland working on St. Thomas and St. Croix and BBC working on St. John.

According to the agency, more than 4,400 of about 8,500 composite poles had been installed across the territory, and primary and secondary electric lines had been transferred from older wooden poles to 3,600 of the new poles.

WAPA said the poles were being installed in areas where underground electrical equipment was not considered a viable option. The agency said the project was scheduled for completion in January 2024.

The archived item also said Haugland Virgin Islands installed new composite poles in the Scott Free area of St. Thomas during the week of October 13, 2021.
