Bryan reported 29 COVID-19 hospitalizations and two additional deaths in U.S. Virgin Islands briefing
Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. said during a Government House briefing on August 2, 2021, that the U.S. Virgin Islands was seeing a worsening COVID-19 surge, with two additional deaths, 29 people hospitalized and more than 250 active cases.
According to the figures released in the briefing, 23 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized at Juan F. Luis Medical Center on St. Croix, including three on ventilators, and six were hospitalized at Schneider Regional Medical Center on St. Thomas, including two on ventilators. The Department of Health was tracking 255 active cases as of August 2: 95 on St. Croix, 156 on St. Thomas and four on St. John.
The government reported a 4.7% positivity rate, 4,663 positive tests to date, 4,369 recoveries and 39 fatalities.
Bryan urged residents to get vaccinated and said most existing COVID-19 restrictions remained in effect. Those included a mask requirement for people age 2 and older, limits of 100 people for mass gatherings, and restrictions on bars, restaurants, beaches and nightlife establishments.
The government also reported that 47,350 people had received a first vaccine dose and 37,281 were fully vaccinated.
During the briefing, the administration announced the July 23 Vax-to-Win lottery winners as Seeraj Rajkumar on St. Croix and Lana Estrill in the St. Thomas-St. John district.
The Department of Health said pop-up testing was scheduled for August 3 through August 5 on St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John.
