U.S. Virgin Islands ordered flags flown at half-staff on Oct. 6 for fallen firefighter memorial

Government House said flags across the U.S. Virgin Islands were to be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Sunday, Oct. 6, 2019, in observance of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service, in accordance with Public Law 107-51.

The administration said Virgin Islands firefighter Dwayne "Yogi" Thomas was among 119 firefighters being honored at the 38th Annual Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland.

Thomas, 57, served 25 years with the Virgin Islands Fire Service. Government House said he died after driving a fire truck to the scene of a fire in January 2018 at Marley Homes on St. Croix.

Government House also said Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. had issued a proclamation declaring Oct. 6-12, 2019, as Fire Prevention Week in the territory.
