Evacuation shelters opened across the U.S. Virgin Islands on Aug. 28, 2019

The Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency said evacuation shelters were being opened across the territory on Aug. 28, 2019, for residents who could not shelter in place during Tropical Storm Dorian.

The Mars Hill shelter in Frederiksted opened at 9 p.m. on Aug. 27, 2019. Additional shelters were scheduled to open at 9 a.m. on Aug. 28, 2019, at the University of the Virgin Islands Great Hall on St. Croix, the Knud Hansen Complex on St. Thomas and Julius E. Sprauve School on St. John.

The government said the shelters would serve residents, including those with special medical needs.

The Department of Human Services advised residents going to shelters to bring supplies for a short-term stay, including food, medications, clothing, bedding, toiletries, identification and other important papers, cash, items for children, and battery-powered devices and chargers.
