VITEMA scheduled CARIBE WAVE tsunami drill for March 16 across U.S. Virgin Islands
V.I. Territorial Emergency Management Agency Director Daryl Jaschen said at the March 13 Government House briefing that the U.S. Virgin Islands would take part in the annual CARIBE WAVE exercise on March 16.
The drill and testing of 44 tsunami sirens across the territory were scheduled for 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on St. Thomas, St. Croix, St. John and Water Island. Jaschen said the exercise was only a drill.
VITEMA also said it would use the Alert VI system to send test messages by text and email in English and Spanish to subscribers. The agency said a follow-up Alert VI message would be sent when the exercise ended.
According to the announcement, Puerto Rico and the British Virgin Islands were scheduled to conduct their own CARIBE WAVE 2023 drills on March 23.
VITEMA said tsunami evacuation maps for St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John were available in the tsunami section of its website.
