Dionne Wells-Hedrington sworn in as Virgin Islands education commissioner

Dionne Wells-Hedrington was sworn in as commissioner of the Virgin Islands Department of Education on Feb. 15, 2023, during a ceremony at the Battery on St. John.

In remarks at the ceremony, Wells-Hedrington said she planned to work with public and private entities to secure resources and programs for students. She also said she looked forward to collaborating with the Board of Education, the Legislature, parents and community stakeholders.

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr., speaking at the event, said Wells-Hedrington would join his Cabinet as education commissioner.

Before her appointment, Wells-Hedrington served as the Education Department’s chief operations officer, where she oversaw development and rollout of the Educational Facility Master Plan and Industry Standards, according to Government House. The administration also said she previously served six years as a superintendent.

Government House said Wells-Hedrington has worked in education for 30 years and holds degrees in biology, education supervision and instruction, and educational leadership.
