WAPA opened 2023 scholarship program offering up to $60,000 for Virgin Islands students

The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority announced on January 25, 2023, that it had opened applications for its 2023 Alva C. McFarlane Scholarship program.
WAPA said it would accept online applications through March 3, 2023, and that the program offered up to $60,000 in financial support.
According to the authority, the scholarship was open to graduating high school seniors living in the U.S. Virgin Islands and to University of the Virgin Islands freshmen and sophomores enrolled in, or planning to enroll in, an engineering program. WAPA also said it offered up to $20,000 in financial assistance for associate's or technical degree study in electrical engineering technology, electronics engineering or a related field. Scholarships in each category were offered per district.
WAPA said applicants had to be U.S. citizens or residents with no criminal record. The authority said selection criteria included academic achievement, standardized college admission test scores, community involvement and a panel interview. It said eligible costs included room and board, tuition, books, fees and supplies.
The authority said UVI applicants had to be accepted into or enrolled in UVI's engineering program to qualify.
