Bryan nominates Derek Gabriel as Public Works commissioner
Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. nominated Derek Gabriel to serve as commissioner of the Virgin Islands Department of Public Works, according to a Government House announcement published Feb. 8, 2021.
Gabriel was the territory manager for APTIM, where the announcement said he provided strategic support for ongoing recovery projects and oversaw business development across the company’s service lines in the territory.
The announcement said Gabriel previously served as deputy commissioner of the Department of Property and Procurement and managed The Lumberyard on St. John, where he helped oversee recovery work after Hurricanes Irma and Maria.
Bryan said he selected Gabriel for his project management and procurement experience rather than the engineering background traditionally associated with the post.
Gabriel was expected to appear before the 34th Legislature for a nomination hearing.
