Mapp issues statement on death of Aretha Franklin
Gov. Kenneth E. Mapp issued a statement on August 16, 2018, expressing condolences to the family, friends and fans of singer and civil-rights activist Aretha Franklin.
Government House said Franklin died early on August 15, 2018. The statement said she was known as the "Queen of Soul," received 40 Grammy nominations during a music career spanning more than six decades, and performed at inaugural events for Presidents Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.
In the statement, Mr. Mapp said he had been a lifelong fan of Franklin and was saddened by her death.
