Federal grant awarded for Phase 2 of Veterans Drive project on St. Thomas

The Virgin Islands Department of Public Works secured a $25 million federal grant for Phase 2 of the Veterans Drive/Waterfront Beautification Project on St. Thomas, according to a Government House statement published Aug. 9, 2022.

The award from the U.S. Department of Transportation was part of the fiscal 2022 Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity, or RAISE, grant program.

According to the statement, Phase 2 would continue the road project around the Virgin Islands Legislature and include a new seawall, roadway widening, a wider promenade, a divided median with additional trees and historic streetlighting. The phase also was set to include on-street parking and improvements to the Vendors Plaza area.

A Department of Transportation notice of grant award described the phase as about 0.92 miles, extending from Hospital Gade to Kronprindsens Tvaer Gade near Windward Passage Hotel. The notice said the project would build a tree-lined four-lane roadway divided by an 11-foot raised median, along with a new seawall and promenade development.
