Mapp marked 100th anniversary of St. Croix Senepol cattle breed

Gov. Kenneth E. Mapp on Aug. 10, 2018, issued a statement marking the 100th anniversary of the development of the St. Croix Senepol cattle breed during events tied to the Senepol Cattle Breeders Symposium, including a reception at The Buccaneer Hotel.

According to the statement, Bromley Nelthropp began developing the breed in 1918 by crossing N’Dama cattle from Senegal with Red Poll cattle from England.

The statement said that in 1940 Fritz E. Lawaetz became general manager of Estate Annaly, where Ward Canady and his eldest son, Hans, developed Annaly Farms into a 1,500-head operation. It said Lawaetz later founded the Virgin Islands organization that became the Senepol Cattle Breeders Association.

The statement also said that after Nelthropp’s herd was dispersed to four local breeders in 1949, the breed on St. Croix grew into the official Senepol Breed Registry, and that Annaly Farms trademarked the name "Senepol" in 1974.

Mapp also recognized Hans Lawaetz in the statement for what he described as a lifetime of dedication to the breed’s development.
