U.S. Virgin Islands ordered public schools closed through Easter break amid COVID-19 response

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. ordered all public schools in the U.S. Virgin Islands to close from March 18, 2020, through the end of the Easter holidays as part of efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19.

At a March 16, 2020 press conference, Bryan said the territory had one confirmed positive case recovering at home, while officials were awaiting final analysis on eight cases under investigation and nine additional samples that had been sent for testing.

Bryan had declared a territorywide state of emergency on March 13, 2020. He also announced that St. Thomas Carnival had been postponed indefinitely, urged residents to limit travel on inter-island ferries unless necessary, and said visitation had been restricted at elder-care facilities.

Virgin Islands Port Authority Executive Director Carlton Dowe said the territory's airports were expected to remain open and cargo vessels would continue delivering food and supplies to seaports.

The administration also urged residents to follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance on social distancing and avoiding mass gatherings.
