Trump approved additional disaster recovery aid for U.S. Virgin Islands

President Donald Trump approved additional disaster assistance for the U.S. Virgin Islands, Government House said on May 23, 2018, increasing the federal share of some hurricane recovery costs following Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

Under the amended disaster declaration, the federal share for Other Needs Assistance under Section 408 of the Stafford Act and all categories of Public Assistance was set at 90%, except for assistance already approved at 100%.

Government House said the amendment also allowed certain hazard-mitigation projects to receive 100% federal funding. Before the change, the Virgin Islands government had been required to cover at least 25% of those costs.

Gov. Kenneth Mapp said the territory had requested both a cost-share adjustment and more time to access appropriated funds. He said the change would reduce or eliminate local costs for debris removal and emergency home repairs.
