Bryan said $1,400 stimulus payments would begin in U.S. Virgin Islands during week of May 3

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. said at a Government House briefing on May 3, 2021, that $1,400 stimulus payments under the American Rescue Plan would begin going out to eligible tax filers during the week of May 3, following completion of the territory's $600 stimulus distribution.

According to Government House, the Virgin Islands Bureau of Internal Revenue sent $600 payments to 41,524 people, or 92% of the roughly 45,000 Virgin Islanders who filed 2019 tax returns.

Bryan said most of the remaining filers either did not qualify because of income limits or had an issue with their 2019 tax filing. Government House said people who did not receive a $600 payment but believed they were eligible should contact the Bureau of Internal Revenue.

At the same briefing, Human Services Commissioner Kimberley Causey-Gomez said the department had submitted a plan for a third round of Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfer assistance covering the 2020-21 school year from August 2020 through September 2021. She said the plan would expand the number of children served from about 13,000 to more than 17,000, including children under age 6 in current SNAP households.

Causey-Gomez also announced a Medicaid-related in-home care program through the Department of Human Services for personal care attendants, with virtual information sessions scheduled for May 7 and May 11.

Government House also listed pop-up COVID-19 testing sites for May 4 through May 6 on St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John. It reported that as of May 1, 2021, the territory was tracking 62 active COVID-19 cases, had recorded 3,138 positive tests and 27 fatalities, and had one hospitalized COVID-19 patient each at Juan F. Luis Hospital and Schneider Regional Medical Center.

Bryan also said he was submitting legislation seeking $1.5 million for Frederiksted waterfront improvements and that negotiations had begun for redevelopment of Hotel on the Cay in Christiansted.

The briefing opened with Bryan noting the death of policy adviser Shauna Bass after what Government House described as a long battle with cancer.
