Bryan joined Labor Secretary Walsh at NGA workforce meeting on July 8
U.S. Labor Secretary Marty Walsh joined Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. of the U.S. Virgin Islands and Missouri Gov. Mike Parson on July 8 during a National Governors Association virtual summer meeting focused on workforce development.
Bryan and Parson, co-chairs of the NGA Community Renewal committee, led the discussion. Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis and Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf also took part in talks on executive, congressional and state-level policy responses.
According to Government House, Walsh said he was pressing Congress to include job-training funding in infrastructure legislation and planned to strengthen and expand Job Corps pathways into employment.
Government House said governors and the U.S. departments of Labor, Commerce and Education planned to focus on school dropouts, community colleges, digital access and skills development, and job quality and equity for workers.
The administration also said the Virgin Islands had established the Labor Department as a state registered apprenticeship agency, with three sponsors covering six occupations, and was using Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery funds through its "Skills for Today" initiative for disaster-recovery job training.
Government House said the territory also had a two-year, $12 million workforce plan aimed at expanding workforce-development infrastructure, programs and services.
