WAPA said it was monitoring Invest 92-L and continuing hurricane preparations

The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said on July 27, 2020, that it was monitoring Invest 92-L east of the Lesser Antilles, which was forecast to affect the territory later that week.

WAPA said it had already taken preparedness steps, including building supplies for restoration work, increasing fuel storage for power plants and maintaining water inventory to support potable water service during and immediately after a storm.

The authority said its hurricane preparations also included arranging additional manpower and equipment, confirming supply contracts and maintaining inventories of electric and water system materials.

Executive Director Lawrence J. Kupfer said the 2020 hurricane season was unfolding during the COVID-19 pandemic, which he said would create new challenges for response and restoration.

WAPA also warned residents not to cut or move downed power lines or poles and to treat all electrical equipment as energized. The authority said outages or damaged equipment could be reported through its dispatch centers.
