Bryan sought 60-day extension of Virgin Islands state of emergency

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. requested that the 33rd Legislature extend the U.S. Virgin Islands state of emergency for 60 days, according to a Government House announcement published July 6, 2020.

The emergency declaration was enacted on March 13, 2020, and extended on May 11, 2020. It was scheduled to expire on July 11, 2020. Bryan asked that it be extended to Sept. 9, 2020.

In a transmittal letter to Senate President Novelle Francis Jr., Bryan said the territory remained at risk from COVID-19 because of its status as a travel destination and said the Health Department was awaiting daily test results on additional individuals.

Bryan said extending the emergency declaration was needed to maintain staffing, obtain and use medical supplies, and continue measures to mitigate the risks of the pandemic. He also said a 60-day extension would reduce the need to call the Legislature into monthly session.
