WAPA said St. Croix underground power projects neared completion as of May 4, 2023
The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said on May 4, 2023, that several underground electrical projects on St. Croix had made substantial progress, including the completion of the Container Port undergrounding project.
WAPA said the Container Port project was energized on March 14, 2023. The authority said the line served residential customers as well as Limetree Training School and Virgin Islands Port Authority facilities.
The authority said the Golden Grove undergrounding project was 99% complete and was serving the Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility and Detention Center, the Patrick Sweeney Training Academy, Police Headquarters, the K9 Unit, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, businesses along Queen Mary Highway and nearby homes.
WAPA said the Midland undergrounding project was 98% complete and was expected to serve Central High School, Original Pentecostal Church, Agape Medical Center and Kingshill Funeral Home. The authority said junctions had been installed at intersections for future expansion into residential areas.
According to the release, the Golden Grove project ran from Golden Grove Road west of the University of the Virgin Islands to Queen Mary Highway near Virgin Islands Police Department facilities. The Midland project ran from Route 663 near Central High School to Queen Mary Highway near Melvin Evans Highway. The Container Port project ran from Container Port Road to the end of Melvin Evans Highway.
WAPA said the projects were funded 90% through a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant, with a 10% match from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
