Bryan approves 25 bills passed in Dec. 19 session of 35th Legislature

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. approved 25 bills and acknowledged one resolution passed by the 35th Legislature during its Dec. 19, 2023 session, according to a Government House statement issued Jan. 22, 2024.

The approved measures included legislation on limited local-purpose identification cards and driver’s licenses, parole eligibility, trade-name renewals, background checks for certain information-technology personnel, foreclosure of liens on real property, mobile integrated healthcare programs, privacy protections for accident and crime victims, a police real-time crime center, newborn safe-haven protections, an auxiliary communications unit within VITEMA, extreme-risk protection orders, school nursing positions, a $2.5 million appropriation for the purchase of four Kronprindsens Gade properties in Charlotte Amalie, the start date for the 2024 regular legislative session, an annual U.S. Virgin Islands music festival, and changes involving the Department of Sports, Parks, and Recreation.

Bryan also approved zoning measures involving Estate Grange, Prince Street and Hospital Street in Frederiksted, Estate Glynn, and a coastal zone permit at Heathen Cove in Chenay Bay on St. Croix.

Other approved bills honored Ralph A. deChabert, Kendall Emanuel George and Melbourne Clarke, and directed the Virgin Islands Council on the Arts to erect a bronze bust of Dr. Alfred O. Heath in Education Park on St. Thomas.

The statement also said Bryan acknowledged the Legislature’s favorable action on the nominations of H. Nathalie Hodge as commissioner of Licensing and Consumer Affairs, Dr. Louis E. Petersen as commissioner of Agriculture, Kevin McCurdy as commissioner of Finance, and Bert Petersen Jr. and Donna M. Christensen as members of the University of the Virgin Islands Board of Trustees.

Government House said Bryan also acknowledged the Legislature’s override of his veto of Bill No. 35-0014 and Resolution No. 1909, Bill No. 35-0217, honoring the St. Croix Majorettes.
