WAPA signed agreement with New York Power Authority for grid technical support
The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said it signed a memorandum of understanding with the New York Power Authority on January 4, 2019, for technical consulting support tied to the rebuilding of the territory’s electric grid.
WAPA said the agreement was intended to support work on generation, transmission and distribution upgrades and the incorporation of alternative energy resources including wind and solar.
According to the authority, its request for technical assistance was facilitated through the American Public Power Association.
The release also said WAPA and the association held a storm preparedness and resilience workshop on St. Thomas in August 2018. WAPA said the event, supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security and Emergency Response, focused on lessons learned and improvement opportunities after the 2017 hurricane season.
