Bryan, Parson met with Education Secretary Cardona on March 23

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. and Missouri Gov. Michael Parson met by Zoom with U.S. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona on March 23, 2021, to discuss education policy as co-chairs of the National Governors Association’s Community Renewal Task Force.

According to Government House, the discussion included digital learning, maintaining technology adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic, college and career readiness, workforce development, disparities among school populations, and using pandemic-era changes to improve the education system.

Government House said Bryan raised concerns about federal limits on states and territories without corresponding guidance on what they should do. He also asked about how schools would maintain expanded access to technology after the pandemic.

Cardona said maintaining that technology would require a shift in national education priorities, according to the Government House account.

The meeting also included discussion of curriculum disparities and access to tools needed to prepare students for the workforce.

Government House said Bryan was scheduled to testify virtually before the U.S. House Committee on Natural Resources on March 24, 2021, about President Joe Biden’s "Build Back Better" plan and its potential support for the U.S. Virgin Islands.
