Bryan issued statement on school maintenance after Education Department update
Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. issued a statement on Aug. 13, 2019, following a Virgin Islands Department of Education press conference on school maintenance and other school-related updates.
In the statement, Bryan said the administration shared families' concerns about school safety and said maintenance challenges involved aging school buildings, including Charlotte Amalie High School, as well as damage sustained during Hurricanes Irma and Maria.
Bryan also said the proposed fiscal year 2020 budget set aside $2 million for school maintenance, which he said was more than had been allocated in recent years.
He said he had confidence that Education Commissioner Racquel Berry-Benjamin, district superintendents and department staff would provide a safe school environment for the 2019-20 school year.
