Gov. Albert Bryan announced on January 27, 2019, that former St. Croix Sen. Positive T.A. Nelson was his nominee to lead the Virgin Islands Department of Agriculture.
Nelson, a longtime educator and former seven-term senator from St. Croix, sponsored the Agriculture in the Classroom Act and was involved in passage of the Sustainable Agriculture Act, according to Government House. The administration also said he was the prime sponsor of the Virgin Islands Medicinal Cannabis Patient Care Act, which Bryan signed into law on January 19, 2019.
Government House said Nelson's priorities as commissioner would include development of the territory's agricultural industry, creating markets for local foods and value-added products, employee morale, food production, water restoration, market distribution, education of future farmers, and restoration of indigenous plants and forestry.
