The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said on October 12, 2021, that the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs approved a $1 million grant to begin acquiring hybrid and electric fleet vehicles and related equipment.

WAPA said the funding was intended to support an initial round of electric bucket trucks and pickup trucks used to maintain the territory’s electric grids.

The authority said the grant would help start a transition away from fossil-fuel-powered vehicles and equipment.

WAPA also said the Interior Department approved a separate $1.15 million grant for the Virgin Islands Energy Office to buy battery electric vehicles for the central government and develop a territory-wide network of electric-vehicle charging stations.
