Lt. Gov. Tregenza Roach opened summer reading challenge on St. Thomas
Lt. Gov. Tregenza Roach on June 19, 2019, opened the 11th Annual Governor’s Summer Reading Challenge on St. Thomas at Yvonne Milliner-Bowsky Elementary School.
Government House said Roach spoke to about 50 students about the importance of reading and writing. He also discussed his children’s book, The Lesson Box, illustrated by St. John artist Karen Samuel.
The summer reading program ran through Sept. 30, 2019, and encouraged students in kindergarten through sixth grade to read five or more books over the summer. According to the announcement, the books were provided by the Office of the Governor and the Virgin Islands Department of Education and were written or illustrated by Virgin Islanders or people from other Caribbean islands.
Students who read at least five books during the summer were to be invited to a party after the start of the 2019-2020 school year.
