Gov. Kenneth E. Mapp proclaimed May 29, 2018, as Luz D. Sierra Day in the U.S. Virgin Islands and named Sierra a Senior of Distinction in observance of Older Americans Month, according to a proclamation signed on May 26, 2018.
The proclamation cited Sierra's government service beginning in 1978, when the tax division was part of the Department of Finance in the Hamilton Building in Christiansted. It said she later worked for the Bureau of Internal Revenue after it became an independent agency.
According to the proclamation, Sierra held several positions during her tenure, including custodial worker, messenger, tax revenue clerk, tax clearing and deposit clerk, PBX operator and receptionist, and senior tax registration teller.
The proclamation also said Sierra had been active in civic and cultural organizations including Hispanos Unidos, AARP and the American Cancer Society.
