Memorial Day events scheduled for St. Thomas and St. Croix on May 28, 2018
Gov. Kenneth E. Mapp issued a Memorial Day statement on May 24, 2018, urging Virgin Islands residents to honor U.S. service members who died in military service by attending commemorative events.
Government House said parades followed by brief ceremonies were scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 28, 2018, on St. Thomas and St. Croix. The St. Croix parade route was set to begin at Bassin Triangle in Christiansted, and the St. Thomas route at Western Cemetery in Charlotte Amalie.
In the statement, Mapp also cited the territory's historical ties to the U.S. military, including documented evidence that men from the Danish West Indies fought at Gettysburg in 1863 and that Virgin Islanders petitioned to be included in the draft during World War II.
