Virgin Islands launches 10th annual Governor’s Summer Reading Challenge
The Virgin Islands Department of Education, in partnership with the Office of the Governor, launched the 10th annual Governor’s Summer Reading Challenge on June 4, 2018. The program was scheduled to run through Sept. 2, 2018.
The challenge asked students in kindergarten through sixth grade to read five or more books over the summer. Students were to receive a packet with two books, tracking sheets and a letter from Gov. Kenneth E. Mapp encouraging participation.
Government House said the books in the packet were written and illustrated by Virgin Islands or Caribbean authors. Five new titles were added for the 2018 challenge: Giraffe Hears the Drums, The Vienna Cake Mystery, Where I Live, Broo ‘Nansi and Sis Iwana and Dolphins of the Caribbean.
Students who completed the challenge were to be invited to a "Big Celebration" party hosted by Mapp at the end of the summer.
