The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said on May 10, 2024, that it received a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of the Interior's Office of Insular Affairs through its Technical Assistance Program.
WAPA said the funding would be used to expand technical training and development programs for employees tied to electric-grid operations and workplace safety.
The authority said earlier Technical Assistance Program funding had supported training that included certification of 30 linemen through the U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program in partnership with Electric Cities of Georgia, as well as cybersecurity training for two information-technology employees through SANS.
WAPA also said it had developed a hybrid training program and worked with Northwest Lineman College as part of its employee training efforts.
