Bryan disputed social-media rumors about COVID-19 vaccine plans in the U.S. Virgin Islands

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. said on Nov. 10, 2020, that social-media claims that U.S. Virgin Islands residents would be used as test subjects for a COVID-19 vaccine were false.

Government House said the rumors followed a "60 Minutes" report on the logistics of distributing a coronavirus vaccine in the United States and the territories under the federal government's Operation Warp Speed. According to the statement, the CBS program reported that the territory did not have the capability to provide ultra-cold storage for a potential vaccine.

Bryan said he would not approve distribution of a vaccine that had not been thoroughly vetted and approved by the Food and Drug Administration and tested.

Government House also said Health Commissioner Justa Encarnacion told the 33rd Legislature during a hearing in October 2020 that she had established a Vaccination Task Force to develop protocols and logistics for distributing COVID-19 vaccinations once a safe vaccine was approved by the FDA.
