WAPA said it would make temporary repairs to highway lights on St. Thomas

The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority said on February 9, 2020, that it would send a local contractor to help the Department of Public Works with temporary repairs or replacements of faulty or missing highway lights along federally designated roads on St. Thomas.

WAPA said the work would focus on the stretch from the Cyril E. King Airport intersection to the bottom of Raphune Hill. The authority said the action followed discussions with Government House on February 9 and came after a vehicle accident on Moravian Highway on February 7 that killed a pedestrian.

WAPA said the temporary work would remain in place until Public Works could complete permanent repairs or full replacement of highway lights, hurricane-damaged poles and other hardware.

On February 9, WAPA line crews also began installing additional street lights on wooden poles along the eastbound lane of Moravian Highway, the authority said. A street light was also planned near the VITRAN bus stop on the westbound lane, and crews were to identify and repair non-working street lights toward the island's east end as needed.

A photo caption released with the statement said four new lights were installed and one was repaired along the eastbound lanes of Moravian Highway, and a new light was installed on the westbound lane approaching the entrance to Cyril E. King Airport.
