Office of Insular Affairs awarded $2.5 million in technical assistance grants for U.S. Virgin Islands projects
The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs awarded about $2.5 million in Technical Assistance Program grants for projects involving the Virgin Islands, according to a Government House announcement published May 18, 2023.
Of that total, more than $1.2 million went to the Virgin Islands government for four projects: $655,423 to the Virgin Islands Fire and EMS Service for emergency response vehicles; $300,000 to the Bureau of Information Technology for a business process improvement technology project; $200,000 to the Office of the Governor for programming tied to the commemoration of 175 years of emancipation in the Virgin Islands; and $60,000 to the Department of Planning and Natural Resources for an update to National Historic Register boundaries for the Catherineberg-Jockumsdahl-Herman Farm District.
The Office of Insular Affairs also awarded about $1.3 million to other entities for Virgin Islands-related projects. Those grants included $658,050 to the Virgin Islands Architecture Center for Built Heritage and Crafts for a capacity-building initiative; $296,968 to the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation for a groundwater recharge study on St. Croix; $296,500 to the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority for water distribution training; and $62,010 to the Ocean Foundation for outreach and youth mentoring at Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge.
