Bryan family moved into Government House residence on St. Croix

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. and his family moved into Government House in Christiansted, making them the first Virgin Islands governor and family in 30 years to live there full time, according to a Government House statement published March 17, 2019.

The statement said first lady Yolanda Bryan and the couple’s younger daughter, Sumayah, were living in the third-floor residence. Their older daughter, Aliyah Bryan, who attends college in Georgia, was expected to stay there during visits home.

Government House said the St. Croix residence had originally housed living quarters but had been used as offices in previous administrations. The statement said Government House on St. Thomas was under renovation and that renovation and design plans there would convert space back into a residence for the governor and family.

The statement cited Section 11, Paragraph 2 of the Revised Organic Act of 1954, which provides that the governor shall maintain an official residence at Government House on St. Thomas and may reside at Government House on St. Croix while on St. Croix.

Government House also said St. Croix’s Government House consists of two houses joined by an open gallery, with the larger house built in 1747 and purchased in 1771, and the other completed in 1797 and purchased in 1826. The most extensive restoration of the buildings was carried out in 1995, according to the statement.
