Howard University pharmacy school, USVI health office launch training and telehealth initiatives

Howard University College of Pharmacy and the Virgin Islands Office of Health Information Technology announced on December 11, 2023, that they had launched two joint initiatives focused on workforce training and digital health research.

The first initiative, Public Health Informatics & Technology for the U.S. Virgin Islands, or PHIT4VI, was described as an exchange and workforce training program for Virgin Islands students, health professionals and information-technology professionals. According to the announcement, the inaugural cohort included eight participants.

The program included elective courses, boot camps and workshops in public-health informatics, health-information technology, population health, care coordination, interoperable health IT systems, electronic health records and health information exchange data systems.

The second initiative was a digital research effort centered on telehealth through Howard University College of Pharmacy’s Telepharmacy and Population Health Center. The announcement said the demonstration project was launched between Howard University College of Pharmacy and Schneider Regional Medical Center on St. Thomas.

According to the announcement, the project’s first goal was to start a telehealth-supported, pharmacist-led transitions-of-care program, and its second goal was to strengthen Schneider Regional Medical Center’s existing Meds to Bedside Medication Management and Compliance Program.

The Office of Health Information Technology said it was established in 2021.
