U.S. Virgin Islands received $7.86 million in CARES Act funding from Office of Insular Affairs

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. announced on April 13, 2020, that the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs had awarded the U.S. Virgin Islands $7,863,776 from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act.

According to Government House, Assistant Secretary of Insular and International Affairs Douglas Domenech notified Bryan in a letter sent over the weekend that the funding had been approved through the $2 trillion federal stimulus law.

Government House said the application process was streamlined because of the public-health emergency. The Office of Insular Affairs did not require a detailed budget or timeline with the initial application, though those items would be required after the award and before any drawdowns were processed.

Bryan’s response and the simplified application for the emergency funding were submitted on April 13, 2020.
