Bryan met with Limetree Bay CEO and executives on April 27

Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. met with newly named Limetree Bay Chief Executive Officer Jeff Rinker and the company’s executive team at Government House on St. Croix on April 27, 2021, to discuss the restart of refinery operations at the company’s facility.

The meeting, which had been planned earlier, followed a gas flaring event at the refinery that led to the closure of several nearby schools and complaints from residents in surrounding areas.

According to Government House, Bryan raised concerns about the flaring event and the company’s response. Government House said Limetree Bay executives told the governor that the April 22 event involved sulfur dioxide and was triggered by excess hydrogen sulfide being sent to the flare for combustion.

Government House said the company also told Bryan that an in-depth investigation into the cause of the incident was underway for reporting to regulatory agencies and that the refinery would keep the community informed of its findings.

Department of Planning and Natural Resources Commissioner Jean Pierre Oriol also attended the meeting.
