Mapp said St. John power units were en route as residents raised recovery concerns at town hall

Gov. Kenneth E. Mapp said on May 15, 2018, that generating units were en route to St. John and that a supplemental solar field system had been approved, steps he said would allow the island to generate its own electricity.

Mapp made the remarks during a town hall on St. John organized by Government House to hear concerns about recovery from Hurricanes Irma and Maria. He said plans were underway to replace the heavily damaged Julius E. Sprauve School and Myrah Keating Smith Clinic and to make the island more self-sufficient during future emergencies.

Residents raised questions about temporary classrooms and possible sites for a new school. Mapp said the ballfield next to the Sprauve campus was a likely location for modular classrooms expected to begin arriving in June 2018, though other sites remained under consideration if they had the needed infrastructure. He said the modular classrooms were expected to be used for at least three years while a new school was designed and built.

Mapp said several properties were being evaluated for the new school and that the campus would also serve as St. John’s primary hurricane shelter. He said drinking water and other emergency supplies would be stored on the island.

He also said road redesign and repair would be part of St. John’s infrastructure overhaul, including plans to reopen Lameshur Road on the south shore to provide an alternate route to the east end.
