Groundbreaking for Veterans Drive project scheduled for May 15 in Charlotte Amalie
Government House announced that a groundbreaking ceremony for the Veterans Drive Improvement Project was scheduled for 10 a.m. on May 15, 2018, on the eastern end of the Charlotte Amalie waterfront near the Lover’s Lane intersection at William Hastie Park.
According to the announcement, the project included construction of two additional lanes along Veterans Drive and a pedestrian promenade supported by a new concrete seawall. The work also was to include bastion-like projections at various points along the promenade, landscaping on the promenade and in the new median, and enhanced pedestrian lighting.
Public Works Commissioner Nelson Petty said in the announcement that the project received its first environmental approval in October 1984 and underwent numerous revisions before final approval in 2017.
Petty said the first phase would begin near the Lucinda Millin intersection and end just west of the Hospital Gade intersection, at the Fort Christian parking lot. He also said construction was expected to cause some disruption and inconvenience to the traveling public.
